Pakistan Becomes Largest Export Market for Proton Cars

Pakistan is Proton’s biggest export market as it expands its global footprint. In March 2021, the automaker exported 794 units to international markets, of which 690 went to Pakistan, according to Paul Tan, a Malaysian news outlet.

The company sold 13,028 units (Malaysia and other countries) in March 2022, an increase of 41 percent over the previous month, with the Saga being the best-selling model at 6,422. 2320 units of the X70 SUV were sold in a month, making it the next best seller.

The Malaysian market is dominated by Proton, while the Pakistani market is not nearly as successful. Among the reasons for this are slow sales, delayed local production, long delivery times, and dampened demand.

As a result of the de-intensification of COVID19 restrictions and the subsequent ease of trade with Malaysia, Al-Haj Automotive has announced it will ramp up its local assembly of Proton cars.

According to market reports, Proton is currently sitting on more than 1,000 orders, causing the delivery of new orders to take up to a year. These issues have angered previous customers and put-off potential buyers from opting for Proton.
