Samsung may launch a new foldable phone this year

Samsung already has two foldable smartphones lineup: Galaxy Z Fold as Galaxy Z Flip. But the company is reportedly planning to launch a third type of foldable device this year. Samsung might launch a smartphone that folds twice.

There are newly discovered codenames called B4, Q4, and N4 as a result of tipsters spotting them in the wild. A new foldable phone could only have the N4 codename since B3 and Q3 belonged to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.

The design of this new folding device is still being finalized, Nikkei’s sources claim. One of them says the phone’s screen, when fully unfolded, would have a “mainstream” aspect ratio of 16:9 or 18:9, making it a bit more app and game-friendly. This is in contrast with the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2, whose screen has an aspect ratio of 25:9 when unfolded.

The report adds that Samsung does not plan to produce large quantities of this phone unlike the Z Flip and Z Fold handsets. It is quite possible that Samsung wants to test how well the N4 is received in the market before kicking off large-scale mass production.

Samsung has published quite a lot of patents over the past that showcase rollable phone concepts as well as foldable phones. The N4 may just have an innovative design given the limited production, but that is only speculation for now.

Samsung usually unveils new foldable phones in the middle of the year and that is when we expect to hear official word on the matter.
