KARACHI: There are 8 out of 10 Pakistanis who consume contaminated water, and this leads to several chronic diseases. Realizing the importance of this issue, the students of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) invented a portable microscope to analyze the water for germs.
While talking to the ARY News programme Bakhabar Savera, Hamza Bhutto and Muhamamd Namdaar Zahid said they have invented a micro telescope by using 3D print. The size of the microscope is almost equal to the size of the hand palm and can be easily carried out in a pocket.

Portable microscopes consist of a lens with the same capacity as compound microscopes and a light source such as an LED, in which a slide containing water samples is placed. There is also a small opening to view the contaminants within the sample.
Hamza explained that the microscope will work through a mobile app, which will detect germs in water by inserting the slide into the device.
Currently, the MUET microscope is not available in the market as significant funding is required to produce it on a mass scale. Once available widely, it will cost Rs. 2,000 per piece.
