Senior journalist Athar Mateen shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI: On Friday, unidentified armed men opened fire on a local news channel’s journalist Athar Mateen vehicle’s in Nazimabad.

According to details, armed motorcyclists opened fire at a vehicle close to Five Star Chowrangi in North Karachi, killing the driver on the spot. Police stated the deceased has been recognized as journalist Athar Mateen.

Whereas, Athar Mateen received 3-4 bullets on his body which caused his death. His body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Local media reported that Mateen came across two men robbing a citizen at gunpoint when he left his house early morning after coming back from dropping his children off to school. He rammed his car into the muggers motorcycle to prevent the mugging attempt. In rage, the men opened fire on Mateen’s car and fled from the scene.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed expressed grief over Mateen’s death and said its a gruesome incident.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain strongly condemned the killing of the senior journalist and expressed deep grief and sorrow.

In a statement, he regretted that the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) government had failed miserably in ensuring law and order in Karachi – the capital of the Sindh province.
