Nation remembers Abdul Sattar Edhi on his 94th birth Anniversary

KARACHI: Nation remembered world-renowned philanthropist, humanitarian and founder of Edhi Foundation Abdul Sattar Edhi on the occasion of his 94th birth anniversary on Monday.

Before the sub-continent’s partition, Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in Gujarat (present-day India) on February 28, 1928. In 1951, he started welfare services in Pakistan, which grew to become the country’s largest and best organized social welfare system.

The world’s largest ambulance network was founded by him, along with shelters and orphanages across the country for homeless people and animals. In Pakistan, he is known as the “Angel of Mercy” and is regarded as a legendary figure.

Edhi’s foundation has provided relief in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Indonesia and even the United States after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

He breathed his last on this day in 2016 at the age of 88 in Karachi. Following his death, his son Faisal Edhi took over as head of the Edhi Foundation.
